May 2025 Newsletter: Building the Bench

If you’ll forgive us a sliver of dark humor in our nation’s dark hour, we’d like to interrupt your mourning of the state of American democracy to invite you to mourn two important figures in our local politics:

• Frank Chopp was the longest-serving WA House Speaker in state history. He helped make Washington’s minimum wage the highest in the nation at the time, fought to create Apple Health for Kids, was a staunch ally in the battle for marriage equality and reproductive rights, and was an ironclad advocate for low-income housing. Those are just a handful of the issues he championed. He is greatly missed. His memorial will be on June 1.
• Washington State Senator Bill Ramos of Issaquah represented the 5th Legislative District. He was a major voice on transportation issues. At the Federal Transit Administration, he helped manage the Tribal Transit Program, serving 56 tribes in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. While in the state legislature, he used his experience to lead a number of highway projects, always with an eye toward their environmental impact. The appointment process for his successor is ongoing. Bill Ramos’s memorial will be held on May 18.

For these men, leadership and the responsibility of public service were a calling. And in this time of darkness, we’d like everyone reading this to take a moment and consider whether you, too, feel called to public service.

This nation needs leaders at every level—as many as can be had. The Democratic Party needs to build the bench. If you’re outraged about the state of our nation, now is the time to step up and run for something. King County Democrats wants to help you bring Democratic values to every position, from Fire and Parks Districts to the State Legislature. Worried about campaigning? We’ll be with you every step of the way—and many elected seats end up going unopposed. Look over our candidate materials and, if you still have questions, email me at [email protected]. The filing deadline is May 9. As long as our democracy still stands, there is no better way to get into the fight.

But it’s also not the only way to fight.

The 2025 Opposition Summit is this weekend, May 3, from 1–3 p.m. in downtown Seattle. Join networks of volunteers to connect and learn about more ways to push back. You can find out more here.

So how about it? Are you ready to stand up for this country? Me too. Grab your sword, and let’s get something done.

Construyendo el Banco

Si nos perdonaras un poco de humor oscuro en este tiempo tan oscuro para nuestra nación, nos gustaría interrumpir tu luto por estado de la democracia Americana para invitarte a lamentar dos figuras importantes en nuestra politica local:

• Frank Chopp tuvo el término más largo como Presidente de la Cámara de Representantes en la historia de nuestro estado. El ayudo a aumentar el salario mínimo en Washington a ser el más alto en todo el país en ese momento, luchó para crear Apple Health para darle seguro médico a los niños, fue un aliado el la lucha para la igualdad en el matrimonio y los derechos reproductivos, y fue un defensor para la vivienda de bajos recursos. Estas son solamente algunas de las áreas en las cuales él fue un líder. Lo extrañaremos mucho. Su memorial será el primero de junio.  
• El Senador del Estatal de Washington Bill Ramos de Issaquah, que represento el 5to distrito legislativo. Él fue una voz en cuestiones de transportación. Trabajó en la Administración de Tránsito Federal donde ayudó a manejar el programa de Tránsito de Tribus, sirviendo a 56 tribus indígenas en el Noroeste Pacifico y Alaska. En la legislatura, usó su experiencia para liderar un gran número de proyectos de carreteras, siempre con un ojo a su impacto ambiental. El nombramiento de su sucesor está en proceso. Su memorial sera del 18 de Mayo.

Para estos hombres, el liderazgo y la responsabilidad del servicio público fue su llamada. En este momento de oscuridad, le pedimos a todo el que lee esto que tome un momento y considere si usted también se siente llamado al servicio público.

Nuestra nación necesita líderes en cada nivel — todos los que podamos tener. El Partido Democratico necesita construir su banco. Si te sientes indignado debido al estado de nuestra nación, ahora es el momento para levantarte y correr para algo. Los Demócratas del Condado King quieren ayudar a traer los valores Democráticos a todas las posiciones lecturas, incluyendo Distritos de Fuego y Parques, a la Legislatura Estatal. Nosotros estaremos contigo cada paso del camino — y muchos escaños terminan sin oposición. Revisa nuestros materiales para candidatos y, si todavía tienes preguntas, mandame un correo electrónico a [email protected]. La fecha limite para anunciar tu candidatura es el 9 de Mayo. Mientras nuestra democracia quede en pie, no hay mejor momento para entrar en la lucha.
